Flaky, Chapped Lips? Try This 3-Step Trick

When your lips are so chapped to the point that you’re peeling flakes off throughout the day, you’re got to take drastic measures. You have to put your lips through what esthetician Natarsha Bimson of Spa Sophia calls “lip rehab.” It’s a daily ritual that will whip your lips into shape. And it works.

Step 1: Gentle Exfoliation

Lip rehab is a three-step system that you can do every night until your lips are back to their smooth, supple state. Step one is simply gentle exfoliation, and not with a lip scrub. “Take some coconut oil and a clean, disposable spoolie brush and very gently scrub your lips in small circles,” Bimson says. “Then, take a hot wash cloth and wipe clean.”

Step 2: Intense Hydration

After exfoliation, it’s time to layer some lip products. First up is a lip serum. Bimson loves Bija Body’s Bedside Manner Lip + Hand Treatment ($24). “Follow this with a thick, nutrient dense lip balm such as cult favorite Nuxe Reve de Miel Lip Balm ($19) or my personal bedtime favorite, Isun Antioxidant Lip Balm ($8),” Bimson says. “Finally you want to seal it all in with a barrier cream (Aquaphor is probably the most well known but there are a ton out there)—gently dab it over the top.”

Step 3: Protection

In the morning, switch to a balm that contains SPF to keep your lips protected from the sun and wind. Bimson recommends Fresh’s Sugar Lip Treatment ($22) or Coola Liplux SPF 15 ($12). If you exfoliate, moisturize, and protect, you can nourish your lips back to health in less than a week.
